We spend thousands on the latest smartphones to stay on top of technology. But you may be able to finance your next phone by selling one of your old devices.
Some early cell phones can have tremendous collector’s value today, especially if the original box is still there. Medium Senest looked around eBay and compiled a list of the most valuable cell phones.
Owners of a Motorola DynaTAC 8000x have hit the jackpot. The first commercially sold cell phone was launched in 1983 and cost around 3,680 euros.
It was not precisely pocket-friendly, with a weight of one kilogram and a length of 33 centimeters. Today, the device can fetch up to 8,000 euros in good condition, provided you can find an interested buyer. In Switzerland, a Motorola DynaTAC 8000x, complete with original instructions, bag, and charger, was auctioned on eBay for a starting price of 85,000 euros. The buy-it-now price was 120,000 euros.
iPhone 2G
The introduction of the first iPhone by Apple in 2007 marked the beginning of a new era. It was no longer just about making calls or sending text messages. You had a small computer in your pocket that was extremely easy to use.
Technically speaking, the iPhone 2G is almost obsolete today. Nevertheless, collectors still pay a lot of money for a first-generation iPhone. The value depends heavily on the condition of the device. You can get around 150 euros for a used iPhone 2G. Unused or initially packaged models can fetch up to 2,000 euros or more.
Nokia 8110
The Nokia 8110 came onto the market in 1996 and became world-famous in 1999 thanks to the cult film “Matrix.”. Its sliding cover and curved design earned it the nickname ‘Matrix banana’. At the time, customers paid just under 1,000 euros for the device.
It was worth keeping this phone, as models in their original packaging can fetch up to three times their original retail price. The value drops significantly if the phone is used, as a maximum of 100 euros can be expected.
Nokia 8800
Phones from the Finnish manufacturer Nokia were an absolute cult in the 1990s and at the beginning of this millennium until Apple introduced the first smartphone and ushered in a new era.
The Nokia 8800, for example, was launched in 2005 and was considered a luxury cell phone due to its scratch-resistant display and elegant sliding mechanism.
Used devices are still changing hands on eBay for between 120 and 200 euros. If the phone is unused at home, it can fetch up to 800 euros.
The Nokia 8800 is also available in an Arte Carbon and a Sirocco version, which are even more valuable. Sellers on eBay are offering these versions for around 1,200 euros.
Motorola 3200
This old Motorola 3200 still has its admirers today. It is the successor to the Motorola DynaTAC 8000x and was launched on the market around ten years later. The 3200 weighs only half as much as its predecessor but is just as unwieldy. The price of the device is around 100 euros. The original packaging can be sold for between 300 and 800 euros if it is still included.
